Scotland 2018: Day 6

DAY 6
ST. ANDREWS~GLAMIS CASTLE:
Today we traveled to St. Andrews, out along the North Sea.  Across one of the three “century bridges” all crossing the river side by side.  One was built in the 19th century, the next the 20th century and the newest on in the 21st century.   With the sun finally out today the changing colors of the leaves on the trees were in their beautiful fall glory.

Our first stop was at West Sands, the beach where the famous running scene was from Chariots of Fire was filmed.  With the theme song from the movie playing on the bus we approached the spectacular beach area.  Alongside the famous Old Course St Andrews Golf Club.

Next stop was to visit the ruins of St. Andrew’s Castle, a castle caught in the Protestant Reformation struggle for hearts and minds. St. Andrew’s Castle was a bishop’s palace, a fortress and a state prison during its 450-year history. Then on to St. Andrew’s Cathedral. We explored the remains of Scotland’s largest and most magnificent medieval church. Even in its ruinous state, the cathedral remains a prominent landmark highly visible from the sea.  Several of the more daring travelers climbed the tower, approximately 170 steps!  The view of the North Sea was amazing from the top.

The group walked into the town for lunch, some at the pub where Prince William and Kate Middleton first met while students at St. Andrew’s. Just wondering if as many St. Andrew’s University students find their life partners as many Stonehill students marry each other?!
Many of us took our guides suggestions and enjoyed some amazing gelato.  Perfect treat for a beautiful sunny day!

In preparation for our next stop Prof. Helga Duncan shared her insights into Shakespear and engaged several of the group to read from Macbeth’s “Three Witches” aloud.  Next we visited the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Glamis Castle, a living breathing monument to Scottish heritage. The legendary setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth, the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and the birthplace of Princess Margaret.

Steeped in history, Glamis Castle has evolved over the years to create a stunning architectural treasure that is full of vitality to this day. This is not a museum but an incredible family home. We toured ten rooms of the over 100 room castle.

We finished out our stay in Edinburgh by venturing out into the city to enjoy each other’s company over dinner at various locations across the city.
